This review of the evidence that the failure of resolution programs contributes to metabolic diseases and that SPMs may play pivotal roles in their resolution found that supplementing the diet with SPMs can, indeed, reduce the chronic low-grade inflammation that can be harmful. Patients with a variety of inflammatory conditions can benefit from SPMs and improved inflammation resolution.
Acute inflammation is healthy for the body, but when inflammation becomes chronic, is can damage tissues and be detrimental to health. The resolution of inflammation involves the termination of neutrophil recruitment, counterregulation of proinflammatory mediators, stimulation of macrophage-mediated clearance, and tissue remodeling.
