Hypertension is not a disease. Dr. Mark Houston claims that hypertension is the manifestation of an abnormal vascular system. In this talk Dr. Houston gets back to the basics by looking at biochemical pathways and exploring what factors precipitate a hypertensive response or high blood pressure. He covers the thought process he uses with his patients in utilizing the Functional Medicine approach.
Mark Houston, MD, MS, FAHA, FASH, DABC is a highly recognized cardiovascular and hypertension specialist and holds several leadership positions, including Director of the Hypertension Institute and Vascular Biology, Medical Director of the Division of Human Nutrition, and Medical Director of Clinical Research at the Hypertension Institute in Nashville, TN. Dr. Houston cofounded the Hypertension Institute, which is one of the leading institutes in the US for hypertension treatment. He is on the faculty and Director Cardiovascular Modules for A4M/MMI. Dr. Houston is also a Clinical Instructor at George Washington University (GWU) School of Medicine and Health Science.
Dr. Houston received his medical degree from Vanderbilt University. He has board certifications by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM), the American Society of Hypertension (ASH) (FASH-Fellow), the American Board of Anti-Aging and Regenerative Medicine (ABAARM, FAARM), and American Board of Cardiology (ABC) Certification in Hypertensive Cardiovascular Disease (DABC). He also holds two master’s degrees, in Human Nutrition and in Metabolic and Nutritional Medicine, from the University of Bridgeport and University of South Florida, respectively.
He was selected as one of the top physicians in the US in Cardiovascular Medicine in 2018 by the US Consumer Research Council and was named one of America’s Best Physicians in Cardiology 2018 by the National Consumer Advisory Board. In addition, Dr. Houston has presented over 10,000 lectures, nationally and internationally, published over 250 medical articles, and published nine books.
