Pregnancy: An Integrative Medicine Perspective

Leslie Stone, MD, IFMCP and Emily Rydbom, CN, BHCN, CNP delve into the current state of medical care and the possibilities personalized medicine offers during pregnancy and delivery

Leslie Stone, MD, IFMCP on the role of genetics in pregnancy:
“We used to say you are stuck where you are. That is entirely wrong. We couldn’t be MORE powerful in our ability to influence this… health is so much more about what you add than what you take away.” —Leslie Stone, MD, IFMCP

The foundation for our health starts during pregnancy and delivery, but the medical system in the United States performs shockingly less effectively during this crucial period than many third-world countries. Leslie Stone, MD, IFMCP and Emily Rydbom, CN, BHCN, CNP explore exciting possibilities with the potential to radically improve pre- and perinatal care and give the next generation a healthier foundation.

Leslie Stone, MD has practiced Obstetrics, Women’s Health, and Family Medicine for 30 years. She specializes in the area of women’s health and healthy childhood development. Dr. Stone believes that her primary role in medicine is to help women enjoy, appreciate, and maximize every passage in their lives, from infancy through aging. Dr. Stone, with David Jones, MD and Michael Stone, MD, provides comprehensive care to families. The clinical emphasis at Stone Medical, P.C. Comprehensive Family Medicine is early recognition of health issues, which, when paired with early interventions, helps correct imbalances that may lead to chronic illnesses. This new way of thinking recognizes the complexities of health and disease in the individual and provides the evidence-based scientific answers to patients’ health care needs. Integrating the principles of both Family Medicine and Functional Medicine helps to provide a means to address patients’ needs on many levels. Precision in diagnosis using conventional assessment tools (e.g. physical exam, labs, X-ray) with lifestyle interventions (nutrition, exercise, and emotional and psychological changes) integrates into a system of comprehensive family medical care.

Emily Rydbom, CN, HN, CNP is a Certified Nutrition Consultant and Certified Nutrition Professional, board certified in Holistic Nutrition, as well as a Certified Lifestyle Educator through Metagenics. She is the owner of Grow Baby, LLC, is a mother of two, and has been practicing a Functional Nutrition approach to pregnancy for over six years. With Leslie Stone, MD and others, Rydbom coauthored a study, “Customized Nutritional Enhancement for Pregnant Women Appears to Lower Incidence of Common Maternal and Neonatal Complications: an Observational Study,” published in Global Advances in Health and Medicine. She has an active clinical practice and works alongside Dr. Stone to help women reach their nutrition and pregnancy health goals. Her passions include empowering women during the preconception, pregnancy, and postnatal periods, as well as teaching families about healthy nutrition and lifestyle balance from 6 months to 5+ years. She completed her undergraduate degree at Southern Oregon University followed by her postgraduate training through Bauman College of Holistic Nutrition, Berkeley, California.
