Dominic D'Agostino, PhD; Assoc. Professor, Dept. of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology, University of South Florida Dominic D’Agostino, PhD is a researcher in neuroscience, molecular pharmacology, and physiology who has conducted mechanistic and clinical research on the ketogenic diet and its health benefits. The ketogenic diet is a high-fat, moderate-protein, low-carbohydrate dietary approach associated with meat eaters, but is the ketogenic diet feasible for vegetarians and even vegans? In this talk Dr. D’Agostino argues that anyone can potentially benefit from the…

Dominic D’Agostino, PhD; Assoc. Professor, Dept. of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology, University of South Florida The ketogenic diet was originally studied and used in patients with seizure disorders, such as epilepsy. The ketogenic diet was shown to be superior to anticonvulsant drug therapies for seizure reduction or remission in a large portion this patient population. The underlying mechanisms mediating the profound impact of the ketogenic diet on seizure disorders include the suppression of oxidative stress and inflammation, in addition to…

Dominic D'Agostino, PhD; Assoc. Professor, Dept. of Molecular Pharmacology and Physiology, University of South Florida In this MAPS talk, Dr. Dominic D’Agostino examines the role of the ketogenic diet in metabolic health optimization. We know that metabolic health correlates with overall health in the body, so by optimizing metabolic health, defined by a set of biomarkers that reliably predict the physiological and metabolic state, we can potentially help delay the onset of many age-related chronic diseases. Dr. D’Agostino explains how…

Ketosis is a natural metabolic state that occurs when there is an absence or shortage of dietary carbohydrates (sources of glucose) consumed as the main energy source for the body. While in ketosis, the body shifts to using fat as the primary energy source. The body increases the breakdown of fat into ketone bodies which are readily used by most tissues, including muscle and brain, as the main fuel.1     Download the PDF

by Lewis Chang, PhD A ketogenic diet is a dietary approach that promotes nutritional ketosis by restricting carbohydrates and increasing the intake of fat with adequate consumption of protein. According to systematic reviews and meta-analyses, ketogenic diets may prevent an increase in appetite on reduced calorie diets1 and help achieve long-term body weight reduction.2 Emerging studies have suggested that ketogenic diets may be beneficial in diabetes management and exercise performance.3,4 Compliance with ketogenic diets can be difficult because the amount…

In Q&A Part 3, Dominic D’Agostino, PhD explains a conundrum: the evidence basis and clinical benefits of the ketogenic diet for certain chronic disease states are well known, however, there are many individuals who are unable or unwilling to implement a ketogenic diet. To address this issue, Dr. D’Agostino and others are researching the impact of exogenous ketone supplementation on raising ketone levels in the body. Dr. D’Agostino shares the latest research in this area and provides his expert perspective…
